More Bazm!

Although not a strictly historical text, the Shahnameh serves as the most important source of oral history in the Persian language. Throughout the text, there are several descriptions of Bazms: an Iranian celebration that involves food and wine.

Beyhaghi history, written in 11th century, further describes elaborate and widely celebrated Bazms of a Zoroastrian nature (Nowrouz, Mehrgan and Sadeh), Islamic celebrations (Fitr and Adha), Bazms in honour of coronations, celebrations following victories in war as well as weddings.

The activity that has always been associated with Bazm is the term paykoobi — equivalent to the modern term of partying — which in Farsi literally translates to “hitting the ground with one’s feet.”
